Brighter, more radiant skin in one 15-minute mask, using the golden root Ethiopian brides have glowed with for generations.

Erd (እርድ) is the Amharic name for turmeric (Curcuma longa), the golden root at the heart of Ethiopian beauty traditions. This is our cosmetic Erd for skin: pure, finely milled turmeric root selected for face masks and body care, sourced from East Africa.

Not to be confused with our cooking spice. Looking for Erd for stews? See Erd | Ethiopian Curry Spice Mix.

What Erd does for your skin

  • ✓ Instant golden glow: skin looks warmer, brighter and more alive after one mask.
  • ✓ More even-looking tone: a traditional way to help dull patches and dark spots look less visible over time.
  • ✓ Calm, happy skin: turmeric is prized for its soothing properties, so skin feels comfortable.
  • ✓ Clearer-looking complexion: a long-standing ritual for blemish-prone skin.
  • ✓ Antioxidant-rich: naturally rich in curcumin, the compound behind turmeric's reputation.
  • ✓ Pre-wedding beauty secret: the same golden ritual used before weddings and celebrations.
  • ✓ Pure and simple: one ingredient. No dyes, no fragrance, no fillers.

Rooted in Ethiopian beauty heritage

In Ethiopia, Erd is more than a spice. Mixed with milk, honey or butter, it has been brushed onto brides, new mothers and anyone preparing for a celebration, to bring out a warm, healthy glow. Originally sourced from East Africa, our Erd brings that ancient ritual to your skincare routine.

How to use

  1. Glow mask: mix ½ teaspoon of Erd with 1 tablespoon of yoghurt or honey into a smooth paste.
  2. Apply a thin layer to clean skin and leave for 10–15 minutes.
  3. Rinse with lukewarm water. Use 1–2 times a week.
  4. Power duo: mix with our Gaba (Qasil) Face Powder for a cleansing and brightening mask in one.

Ingredients

100% ground turmeric root (Curcuma longa).

Good to know

  • For external, cosmetic use. Avoid contact with eyes.
  • Turmeric can temporarily tint very light skin, towels and fabrics. A small amount is enough, and a gentle wash or a cleanser removes any tint.
  • Do a patch test 24 hours before first use.
  • Store dry and sealed, away from direct sunlight.

Our story

An ancient East-african ritual, originally sourced from Eritrea.

Long before bottled cleansers and boxed hair dyes, women across Eritrea and East Africa cared for their skin and hair with what the land gave them: Gaba leaves, golden Erd root and Henna.

These rituals were passed from grandmother to mother to daughter, and used before weddings, holidays and every important day. At Grmawit we source them from where they originally grow and bring that heritage to you, pure and unchanged.

Questions, answered

Is it really 100% natural?

Yes. Each powder is one single plant ingredient, finely milled. No fragrance, preservatives, dyes or fillers are added.

Where does it come from?

All three powders are originally sourced from East Africa and rooted in Ethiopian beauty traditions that go back generations.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

These rituals are traditionally used on all skin types, but every skin is different. Always do a patch test 24–48 hours before first use.

How long does one pouch last?

You only need a small amount per treatment, so one jar lasts for many masks, washes or hair treatments.

Can I combine the powders?

Yes. You can mix Gaba and Erd for a cleansing and glow mask in one, and use Henna for your weekly hair ritual.
